Barcelona
JOAQUIN CAMPOS (ORIHUELA, 1748-MURCIA, 1811).
"Dolorosa", 1764.
Oil on copper.
Damage and losses.
It has a label from the Sala Gaspar (Barcelona).
Measurements: 31 x 26 cm; 43 x 38 cm (frame).
The painter has represented Mary almost half-length, wearing a red tunic and completely covered by a blue mantle, her characteristic colours. The figure of the Virgin is set against a neutral, dark background, which helps to highlight the most illuminated area of the painting, the ivory flesh tones of the face and hands. Mary has a pained but serene expression and clasps her hands together in a gesture of grief. On her breast a sword can be seen symbolically piercing her, an element that recalls the pain that pierced her heart at the moment of Christ's death. Both the attitude and this last attribute allow us to classify her as a Sorrowful Virgin, a common typology in art since the end of the Middle Ages, which was highly appreciated in the Baroque period.
Joaquín Campos was a Valencian painter who began his artistic training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos. Thanks to his links with Francisco Salzillo, in 1981 he began to work as Lieutenant Director of Drawing at the Economic Society of Friends of the Country of Murcia. It was in Murcia, where he set up his workshop where he worked on numerous commissions for the city itself and other nearby places, such as the diocese of Cartagena. Specialising in religious works, the genre for which he received most commissions, Joaquín Campos also produced portraits of the personalities of the time, such as Bishop Rubín Celis, and his mentor Francisco Salzillo, among others.
